Frequently Asked Questions

You input a SHA-256 hash (usually from a printed affidavit) and upload the original digital file. The system re-calculates the file's hash and compares it. A match proves the file is identical to the one originally hashed.

The Bhartiya Sakshya Adhiniyam (BSA) specifies SHA-256 as a secure standard for ensuring the integrity of digital evidence. It prevents tampering and provides a unique "fingerprint" for every file.

Yes. The report records both hash values in full, the file details, when and how the check was made, and a blockchain timestamp of the file's hash. Verifying is free; the print-ready report PDF costs 3 credits and is emailed to you.

Yes. We utilize the Web Crypto API, which runs the hashing algorithm entirely on your local CPU. Your files never touch our servers.

Electronic evidence — common questions

Section 63(4) of the Bharatiya Sakshya Adhiniyam, 2023. Since 1 July 2024 the certificate follows the form in the BSA Schedule, in two parts (Part A by the person in charge of the device, Part B by an expert), and names the record by its hash value.

A hash is the file’s fingerprint: change one character and the SHA-256 value changes completely. Matching hashes show the court is looking at the same record you certified. The Supreme Court called the hash value an electronic fingerprint in Pune Bar Association v. Union of India (22 May 2026).

No. EvidenceHash calculates the SHA-256 hash in your browser; the file stays on your device.

Yes. Export the chat, hash the exported file, and certify that file under Section 63(4).
