When Will My Case Be Called? Cause List, Item Number & Display Board

Your case is in today’s cause list. The question every advocate and litigant has is the same: when will it actually be called? The answer is in two places — the cause list (the plan for the day) and the court’s display board (what is happening right now).

Cause list vs display board

Reading your item number

Your item number is your matter’s position in that bench’s list for the day. Fresh matters, after-notice matters, regular hearings and supplementary lists may be taken in a different order on different benches, so the item number tells you the sequence, not the time. Watch the display board for the number currently being heard and the pace of the bench.

Display board terms

  • Pass over — your matter was called but taken up later at a party’s or counsel’s request.
  • Not reached — the bench rose before reaching your item; a new date will follow.
  • Part heard — the hearing started and will continue on another day.
  • Adjourned / Next date — the matter will not be heard today.

Stop waiting in the corridor

CourtQue sends you a WhatsApp message as your matter approaches on the court’s display board, so you can work in chambers or another court and walk in at the right time. Nothing to install — you get alerts on the WhatsApp you already use.
